How to Make a Cloth Badge Holder
Many employers mandate that employees wear identification badges during work hours for security purposes. Creating your own cloth badge holder is a good way to express your individuality and still comply with the wishes of your employer. This quick and easy horizontal top-load cloth badge holder is a no-sew project that makes an easily embellished canvas for your personal touches. Leave the cloth badge holder as is, or add glued-on notions to the bias tape edging.
Things You'll Need
- 3-by-4-inch clear vinyl rectangle
- 3-by-4-inch fabric rectangle
- 36 inches polyester cord
- Fray Check Fabric Sealant
- Glue gun and glue sticks
- Hole punch
- Sponge
- 2½-by 3½-inch card stock rectangle

1
Glue one 4-inch piece of double-fold bias tape onto one 4-inch edge of the clear vinyl rectangle. This will be the "top" of the badge holder. Insert the vinyl edge into the fold of the bias tape and glue by squirting a narrow line of glue on both sides of the vinyl edge with the glue gun.
-
2
Apply a line of Fray Check to one of the 4-inch edges of the fabric rectangle. Allow to dry. This is the "top" of the fabric for the "top" of the badge holder.

3
Place the 3-by-4 fabric rectangle on the table with the wrong side of the fabric facing you and with the edge with the Fray Check applied at the top. Squirt a narrow line of glue, with the glue gun, along the two 3-inch sides and the bottom 4-inch edge of the badge holder fabric. Don't put any glue along the top 4-inch edge of the fabric that has the Fray Check. This is where the badge will be inserted.
-
4
Place the clear rectangle of vinyl on top of the glue, with the top edge of the vinyl encased in the double-fold bias tape aligned with the top edge of the fabric (that has the Fray Check applied). Press gently to adhere the vinyl to the fabric. Wipe excess glue with the sponge.
-
5
Glue the remaining 4-inch piece of double-fold bias tape along the bottom 4-inch edge of the cloth badge holder by inserting the glued-together double layer of vinyl/fabric into the fold of the bias tape. Apply a line of glue on the top of the vinyl bottom edge and on the top of the fabric bottom edge.
-
6
Glue a 3-inch piece of double-fold bias tape to each 3-inch side of the badge holder by applying a line of glue on top of the vinyl edge and on top of the fabric edge and inserting the double layer into the fold of the bias tape. Insert the rectangle of card stock into the badge holder top opening.
-
7
Punch a hole through all of the layers in the top center with a hole punch, ¼ inch from the top edges. Insert the badge into the top opening.
-
8
Slide the cord through the holes and tie the ends in a knot. Slip the cord loop around the neck and position the cloth badge holder in the front center of the torso.
