How to Measure Bioidentical Hormone Cream

Concerns about traditional hormone replacement therapy have spurred many women and healthcare practitioners to adopt topical application of hormone creams. Bioidentical hormone creams, in terms of chemical composition, are identical to hormones produced by the body. Among the most widely used are estrogen and progesterone creams, though testosterone is also available. As hormone production fluctuates in perimenopausal and menopausal women, these creams have become popular among consumers in this demographic. Bioidentical hormone creams made by pharmaceutical companies are FDA-approved; those produced at compounding pharmacies are not. These creams are easily measured for proper application.

Instructions

  1. If Your Cream Comes With a Syringe

    • 1

Insert the provided syringe into the container of hormone cream.

    • 2

Pull on the syringe plunger to allow bioidentical hormone cream to fill the syringe. You may need to push up on the cream container's bottom to urge cream into the syringe.

    • 3

Stop pulling the syringe when the cream has reached the appropriate line of measurement on the syringe, for example, 1.25 ml.

    • 4

Apply the hormone cream as directed. If your doctor prescribed the cream, follow her directions strictly. Otherwise, adhere to the directions of the pharmacist or hormone cream manufacturer, as described in the packaging.

If Your Cream Comes with a Measuring Spoon

    • 5

Scoop the cream with the measuring spoon. Be sure to use the dosage prescribed by your doctor or recommended by the pharmacist or manufacturer.

    • 6

Level off the cream. A level 1/4 teaspoon, for example, is very different from a heaping 1/4 teaspoon. Take care to measure the cream precisely according to your prescription or directions. Bioidentical hormone cream is intended for specific use. Using more or less than is prescribed or recommended will prevent your achieving the desired results in the desired timeframe.

    • 7

Apply the hormone cream as prescribed by your practitioner, as directed by the pharmacist, or as indicated in the product packaging.

    • 8

Clean the spoon thoroughly with soap and water after each use. Not doing so may result in product contamination.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply bioidentical hormone creams to soft-tissue areas of the body, as specified by your healthcare professional, pharmacist, or product packaging.

  • Bioidentical hormone creams are powerful. Take care to measure accurately and follow application instructions to the letter. Further, be sure to respect contraindication information.
