How to Use a Lock Nut

The mechanical world holds many parts, accessories and tools used in the trade. Basic tools such as nuts and bolts, screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers are all common in a contemporary household. A lock nut mechanism is used widely on various structures such as brackets, framework and most furniture. This mechanism produces a tighter element of security on a bolt, reinforcing the overall structure. Fastening different types of bolts with lock nuts is a basic mechanical process.

Instructions

    • 1

Fasten the bolt into place using a nut and wrench. Ensure that the nut fits the dimensions of the bolt. Then screw it into place flush against the bolted surface by turning clockwise.

    • 2

Place a lock nut (slightly smaller nut than the original nut) onto the bolt thread. The nut will be smaller in height but still be able to screw onto the bolt.

    • 3

Screw the lock not tight against the first nut with your fingers in a clockwise motion. Then use an appropriate wrench to apply torque until both nuts move in unison with the turn of your wrench. The nuts should now be locked in place together.
