How to Tie Wedding Bouquets
The bride and the bridal party usually carry floral bouquets during the wedding ceremony. Wedding bouquets are typically held together with pins and wires, with ribbons or bows tied around the stems to further help keep the bouquet intact and to serve as decorative accents. Tying a wedding bouquet takes some practice, but if you are putting together your own bouquets, you can achieve a professional look by tying your bouquets with a few simple materials.
Things You'll Need
- Real or artificial flower bouquets
- 3 yards of floral wire
- Wire cutters
- 2 yards of 1-inch-wide ribbon, any color
- 2 yards of 2-inch-wide ribbon in the same color as the 1-inch-wide ribbon
- Scissors
- Large floral straight pins, at least 2 inches long
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut an approximately 2-foot-long strand of floral wire.
-
2
Hold onto the upper part of the stems of the bouquet with one hand and wrap the wire around the stems, starting at the top, with the other hand. You may need another person's help to hold the stems while you wrap.
-
-
3
Stop wrapping the wire when you're an inch from the bottom of the stems. Cut off any excess wire with the wire cutters.
-
4
Cut a 2-foot-long strand of 1-inch-wide ribbon.
-
5
Put a straight pin through one end of the ribbon and stick the pin into the upper part of one stem, just above the wire. Wrap the ribbon in a downward spiral around the stems, overlapping the ribbon slightly each time you go around so that the stems and wire are completely covered.
-
6
Stop wrapping the stems when you reach the bottom; the bottom of the stems can show, but make sure that all of the wire is covered. Use another straight pin to hold the bottom end of the ribbon in place. Cut off any excess ribbon with scissors.
-
7
Cut a 1-foot-long piece of 2-inch-wide ribbon.
-
8
Lay the ribbon out flat on a clean table or countertop, shiny side down. Gently set the bouquet in the center of the ribbon. Tie a large bow around the stems by making two equal loops from each side of the ribbon. Cross one loop over the other. According to Shopheidi.com, "Knot the loops by pushing right loop beneath the left, pull under and through the hole." Tie the knot tightly enough for the bow to stay in place around the bouquet.

Tips & Warnings
Do not wrap the stems too tightly with the wire. The wire shouldn't cut into the stems.
When using real flowers, make the bouquet no more than 24 hours before the event for the freshest look.
