How to Lay Pergo Flooring

Pergo is laminate flooring that can be installed over almost any existing flooring and requires no glue, staples or nails. Costing generally 40 percent less than real hardwood flooring and more resistant to scratches, Pergo has become a very popular option for flooring in construction. It requires less maintenance than hardwood and is available in a large variety of realistic-looking wood finishes, colors and styles. It comes with a cushioning pad attached to the back of the flooring to reduce impact noise and slapping of flooring against plywood base flooring. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Bring cases of Pergo flooring into the room where they will be installed and allow them to sit for 48 hours. The flooring needs to become conditioned to the environment it will be installed in and must be allowed ample time to expand, contract, to dry out or absorb moisture in the air.

    • 2

Make sure the floor or plywood that you are installing Pergo over is extremely clean. Even the presence of a pebble or a little dirt can require you to remove the installed piece of Pergo and reinstall the laminate flooring.

    • 3

Lay a piece of Pergo laminate flooring against the baseboard trim along the edge of one wall.

    • 4

Stagger the next piece you install. Cut the second piece in half and lay this piece next to the first board of laminate flooring.

    • 5

Connect pieces of laminate flooring by laying a piece of Pergo on the floor, holding another piece that you will connect to the existing piece on the floor at a 45 degree angle and sliding the interlocking edges together. Push down on the angled piece of Pergo flooring until it is touching the floor.

    • 6

Tap at the point of connection to ensure a good seal.

    • 7

Cut flooring to the right size when you get to the end of a wall. Lay a piece of Pergo down on top of the last piece you laid down. Use a pencil and mark where the cut needs to be made. Cut the Pergo using a table or hand saw and install.

    • 8

Keep all cut pieces of Pergo for the opposing sides of walls or as filler pieces. A cut piece of Pergo is as good as new and you never know where you may need to use it.

    • 9

Repeat steps above until entire room is finished and flooring is installed.

Tips & Warnings

  • The edges of Pergo sometimes come shipped uneven and inconsistent. If protruding and uniform pieces of edges are still attached to flooring, make sure to remove them before installing. This can save a lot of time and frustration.

  • Make sure to leave a quarter-inch gap at all wall edges. Pergo has wood components and may need to expand. Leaving this gap will keep laminate flooring expansion from causing unsightly buckling.
