How to Request a Donated Car

Most states offer assistance to those who really need it, providing food or even work to help people find jobs. Some charities in fact are helping those in desperate need by providing vehicles. These previously donated cars are given to families who need them in order to get to work and help people become more self-sufficient. There are a few things you need to do to receive one of these vehicles.

Find a charity. Most charities that donate vehicles can be found online. (Most of the time if you are already receiving rental assistance or food stamps you can also ask your worker about the car donation program and she can help you find a reputable charity).
Make sure you match the charities' criteria. You won't be able to receive a donated car unless you meet certain requirements. Most of these requirements include victims of disaster or domestic abuse, military families, people who live in homeless shelters or those who are currently working but still poor. You will have to show proof of employment or disability status.

Fill out an application. Online applications also require you to write a brief reason as to why you are in need of a car and why you or your family should receive it. Applications require a lot of personal information and may require you to produce pay stubs or other documents to verify you and your family's income.

Wait and see if you have been accepted. Most of these charities prefer you to call them only if you are donating your own car. To increase your chances, you may want to apply for several car donations at one time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Social services in your state can help you find out how to request a car as well as apply for one.

  • There are plenty of charties that accept car donations. However, not all of these give out free cars.

  • Beware of online scams. To verify whether or not a charity exists before giving out personal information, contact the Better Business Bureau.
