How to Paint Expresso Furniture
Refurbish furniture by adding dark espresso paint to the surface for a polished, modern look. Use a rich dark umber latex paint available at home improvement centers --- 1 qt. of paint will cover 100 square feet of flat surface. Semi-gloss paint is recommended for a slightly higher sheen, ease of cleaning and durability. Don't forget to keep paint to add color to coordinating accent pieces such as picture frames, lamps and even artwork to pull the room's new color scheme together. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Create a paint and project area. Choose a room with adequate air circulation and ventilation to avoid buildup of paint fumes. Set box fans in the room to assist with moving air in the room. Place drop clothes on the floor and smooth out any wrinkles. Place furniture on the drop cloth. Lightly wash all furniture using warm, soapy water and a sponge. Remove all dirt and debris. Dry furniture with a clean terry towel.

Lightly scuff up the surface of the furniture; the grit created by sanding will allow paint to adhere and bond well to the surface. Use a fine-grit sanding block and rub the surface. Remember to rub in the direction of the wood grain. Wipe off the furniture with a tack cloth once the sanding is complete to remove any dust created.

Pour a small amount of semi-gloss dark brown latex paint paint into a paint tray. Use a mini foam roller and roll on the paint to the smooth surfaces of the furniture such as tabletops, headboards or sides of furniture. Apply paint with a paintbrush to any areas where the roller will not be ideal --- such as wood spindles, wood carvings or other non-flat surfaces. Allow paint to dry four to six hours between coats. A second or even third coat of paint may be necessary to achieve a rich espresso color. Allow furniture to dry 24 to 48 hours before placing back into the room.
