Measure the width and depth of a sample paver stone in inches with a ruler. These will be the dimensions as you look down onto the paver from above. Record the measurements. on a piece of paper.

Calculate the area of your sample paver. Multiply together the width and depth, then divide the resulting number by 144. This will give you the area of the paver in square feet. For example, suppose your paver measures 12 inches by 12 inches: multiply 12x12 for a total of 144. Divide this number by 144 and the result is 1. The paver has an area of 1 square foot. Use a calculator if necessary, and write down the area of your sample paver on a piece of paper.

Measure the area you plan to cover with pavers, using a tape measure. If the area is a simple rectangle, simply measure the width by the depth.
