How to Convert Regular Sheets Into Waterbed Sheets

Waterbed sheets are designed to stay in place and compensate for the mattress movements of a waterbed. The top sheet is sewn to the fitted sheet at the foot to keep it from shifting. The corners of the fitted sheet have deep pockets that use the weight of the water to keep them from peeling off. A waterbed sheet set can be made from conventional bedding that's big enough for the waterbed mattress. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the regular sheets against the waterbed mattress to be covered. The fitted sheet must be long enough to wrap around the waterbed mattress with some excess at the corners. The top sheet need only cover the surface of the mattress.

    • 2

Take in the corners of the fitted sheet to deepen the pockets and tighten the fit. The sides of waterbed mattresses are not as tall as conventional beds. Make two diagonal folds from the point of the corner seam to the outside edge, gathering the excess material to the inner side of the sheet. Use straight pins to hold the material in place. Sew seams along the folds with a sewing machine.

    • 3

Put the fitted sheet on over the waterbed mattress. Mark the upper edge of the foot of the sheet as it fits over the mattress with chalk or washable marker. Measure 14 inches in from both corners with a measuring tape and mark the line between the two points. Remove the fitted sheet.

    • 4

Center the foot of the top sheet over the mark on the fitted sheet and use a sewing machine to sew the two together on the line, leaving the outside corners of the top sheet free.
