How to Repair a Spoke in a Bicycle Wheel
Riding a bicycle with a broken spoke can weaken the wheel and lead to host of problems that ultimately will leave you stranded. To avoid these problem, fix the spoke as soon as you can. With the right tools you can replace your broken spoke at home. Take care to align the tire and tighten the new spoke in tune with the others so you will have a smooth ride the next time you ride.
Things You'll Need
- Replacement spoke
- Adjustable wrench
- 2 tire irons
- Wire cutters
- Bicycle spoke wrench
- File
- Bike pump
- Linseed oil (optional)

Set the bicycle upside down, propping it firmly into place.

Remove the wheel by loosening the nuts that hold it in place.

Let the air out of the tire and use the tire irons to work the tire and tube off of the rim.

Insert the threaded end of the spoke head through the wheel's rim and screw the spoke nipple on, tightening it by hand only.

Place the wheel back in the fork of the bicycle frame and tighten the wheel nuts.

Spin the rim and observe the wheel as it turns, noting if the spin is even.

Tighten the spoke with the spoke wrench if the spin is warped.

Spin to check the alignment again, readjusting the tightness of the spoke nipple until the wheel turns evenly.

File the new spoke flat if it sticks out through the rim end of the nipple. Replace the rubber band, tube and tire.

Pump the tire full of air and you are ready to roll.

Tips & Warnings
You may want to lubricate the nipple threads with linseed oil first, before threading it onto the new spoke.
