How to Detect Keyboard Logger

Malicious websites on the Internet can secretly download programs to your computer without your knowledge. One of these programs could be a keyboard logger, a program that records the keystrokes made on a keyboard, which can include such things as credit card numbers, passwords, and email addresses. Fortunately, special software has been made that can find and destroy any keyboard loggers that may reside on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Download an anti-malware program for your computer. (See "Resources" below.)

    • 2

Install the program. Follow the prompts provided by the installer. Note that for the most part you should be able to accept default options.

    • 3

Run the software. If it asks you if it can perform a quick scan, give it permission to do so. The software will then retrieve basic information about the setup of your computer and hard drive.

    • 4

Run a full system scan with the anti-malware software. The software will then detect the keyboard logger and give you the choice of deleting it or not.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider installing a firewall or a virus scanner that can automatically detect malicious software before it can be installed onto your computer.

  • Run the anti-malware software regularly. If you frequently download and use software, run it once a week. If you suspect something about software you downloaded or a site you visited, run the program immediately.

  • Use an add-on or plug-in that can detect potentially risky sites before you actually visit them. (See "References" for a selection of programs.)

  • Remember to use common sense when surfing the Internet. If a website doesn't look trustworthy, it probably isn't. Just clicking on the site can download malicious software to your computer.

  • Be careful when selecting programs to delete. Some programs that are identified as keyboard loggers could actually be legitimate programs. Check to make sure.
