How to Get an Agent for Dance Auditions

A dance agent is the gateway between you and cast and production directors. He or she has access to audition and casting information that you may have trouble accessing as a dancer.

1. Move to the city where you would like to work and be represented. Auditions often come up at very short notice, and you need to be able to quickly rearrange plans.

2. Create a promotional pack that includes a professional 8x10 headshot and photos of you dancing in productions. Also include an updated resume and samples of your work.

3. Research agencies in your area. Investigate who they have signed and what their dancers have gone on to do professionally. Create a short-list of agencies you would like to contact.

4. Consult the "Ross Reports," a compilation of every legitimate agency, to research the agencies you plan on contacting (www.rossreports.com).

5. Submit your promotional pack along with a covering letter to the agencies you have chosen to contact. Be sure to include all of your contact details.

6. Follow up with a call to ask if the agency has received your information and suggest that they contact you if they have an questions or need clarification.

Tips & Warnings

• Network with other dancers and at dance events to get the information out that you are looking for an agent.

• Agents will expect to earn 10% of your pay, as this is industry standard. Be wary of an agent asking for a higher percentage.
