How to Find the Best Canine Ophthalmologist
Your dog has an eye problem, and your veterinarian has recommended that you consult a veterinary ophthalmologist. Or maybe you need a second opinion for a particular treatment. Your veterinarian might have a recommendation, but how do you know this is the best ophthalmologist for your dog?
Instructions

-
1
Request a recommendation from your veterinarian. Quite often, your veterinarian knows the reputations of specialists in the area.
-
2
Look up veterinary ophthalmologists on the website for the American College Of Veterinary Ophthalmologists Diplomates (ACVO), available either on their website or through the Canine Eye Registration Foundation. Ophthalmologists are listed by state or even by country, if applicable. If your veterinarian has recommended an ophthalmologist, the eye doctor should be a member of ACVO.

3
Call your local veterinary school for referrals. Ask if they can recommend a specific veterinarian for the condition your dog is experiencing.
-
4
Call the ophthalmologist and ask for credentials. How long has he practiced? Is he experienced in the latest techniques for treating the condition your dog has? Does he have the latest diagnostic equipment?
-
5
Make an appointment with the ophthalmologist. A good specialist will listen to you and understand your fears and concerns. He also will do diagnostic tests and make recommendations for treatment. He should explain all treatment options.
