How to Replace an Aladdin Kerosene Heater Wick

Ezmeralda Lee

There are numerous types of wicks for the different Aladdin Kerosene Heater models, even some designed solely for the purpose of producing a colored flame. The following instructions should guide you through replacing a #37 clip wick, the most common wick used in Aladdin Kerosene Heaters.

  1. Flip through the owner’s manual of your Aladdin Kerosene Heater. If you do not have an owner’s manual, the link in the references section of this article may help you to find the correct one for your heater. Utilize the owner’s manual to determine the correct type of wick for use with your heater.

  2. Turn the burner basket and flame spreader counterclockwise to remove. Continue to turn the current wick until the cog disengages. Pull the wick and the fuel container it is attached to out of the heater.

  3. Remove the fuel from the tank by draining the kerosene using the funnel and the kerosene safe container. You will want to wear old clothes and a surgical mask to prevent ruined clothes and a swimming head. If the tank is empty, skip this step.

  4. Pull the wick out of the end of the fuel tank. You will have to grab the wick directly above the teeth of the carrier that are holding the wick into place. Pressing on the wick to make it skinner causes it to disengage from the teeth and be pulled out of the end of the fuel tank.

  5. Take the new wick, and guide it back into the slot you removed the old wick from. You will have to press and slowly guide the wick into the tank in order to keep the teeth on the carrier from engaging the wick. Guide the wick until is hangs only a half of an inch outside of the tank.

  6. Ensure that the teeth of the wick carrier have engaged by pulling firmly on the end of the wick. Place the fuel container inside the heater, replacing all pieces removed earlier. You may need to use the small screwdriver to push objects into place.

  7. Once everything is back into place, refill the tank and allow the new wick to soak in kerosene from the tank for at least an hour before you attempt to light and use the heater.
