How to Make a Kicker Ramp
A kicker ramp, or launch ramp, is one of the easiest and least expensive ramps to build and can be used for skateboarding, snowboarding, rollerblading or BMX riding. Launch ramps are an integral part of street skateboarding and have roots in the beginnings of the sport. Most long-time skateboarders can remember building their first launch ramp and how it improved their enjoyment of skateboarding. A launch ramp can transform any flat, smooth surface into an exciting place to skateboard. Constructing a proper launch ramp requires the proper tools, materials and site selection.

- Two 4x8 sheets 3/8-inch plywood
- 1-2 lbs. wood screws

- Jigsaw
- Power drill with screwdriver bit
- T-square (optional)

Construct the Ramp
-
1
Find the best site for construction of the ramp. When building larger ramps, the finished product is too enormous and heavy to move. So the construction should be done where the half pipe will be used. Launch ramps are small enough to construct in a garage and then cart to a good skate spot.

2
Draw the sides on the thicker sheet of plywood, the 3/4-inch sheet. Draw the curve or transition in the sides onto the plywood sheet using string and a pencil to act as a compass set between 8 to 10 feet in diameter. Use the jigsaw to follow the lines and cut out the sides.

Cut the 2x4s in half and use wood screws to secure them to the sides as joists, placing them 8 to 10 inches apart up the transition. Attach a joist at the top and bottom corner. The joist at the front of the launch should be flat on the ground.

4
Surface the ramp using the thinner sheet of plywood, the 3/8-inch sheet. Add a second layer of plywood for strength, making sure the grain of the wood runs opposite of the first layer. If desired, add a finish layer of Masonite or Skatelite to smooth out the ramp.
