How to Replace a Flushometer

A flushometer is a common device that many public organizations use for economical and sanitation purposes. The flushometer sits on the back of the toilet serving as the "tank" that uses minimal amounts of water, conserving and saving money for the owner. Flushometers purge the water into the toilet when a flush is made, eliminating the gravitational basis of the more widely used and wasteful tank toilet. The electronic version uses motion sensory to determine when the flush should occur, removing the need for handles. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water to the toilet. Unscrew the tail piece coupling and the vacuum breaker coupling using the wrench. These two nuts are meant to secure the flushometer body to the wall and to the flush connector. Once these are loose, remove the flushometer body by slipping it from the flush connector and the tail piece connected to the wall.

    • 2

Unscrew the control stop from the piping in the wall. Lift the flush connector from the toilet, and set all the pieces aside. Screw the new control stop piece by hand onto the pipe coming from the wall. Measure the amount needed for the cover tube, especially if you have replaced your toilet. Measure between where the control stop attaches to the wall to where the flushometer body will be just above the toilet.

    • 3

Cut the cover pipe to fit using the saw. Place the cover pipe onto the control stop, wet the O-ring with water and place it onto the flushometer body. Set the flushometer body onto the pipe. If the extended distance is not needed, place the flushometer body directly upon the control stop. Tighten the tail piece coupling with the wrench.

    • 4

Place the spud coupling, nylon slip gasket, rubber gasket and the spud flange, in that order, onto the vacuum breaker tube. Place the breaker repair ring and then the friction ring onto the vacuum breaker tube. Slide the tube into the flushometer body, and tighten the breaker coupling with the wrench.

    • 5

Tighten the spud coupling onto the toilet fixture with your hands. Place an O-ring onto the diaphragm, and push it into the flushometer main assembly. Set this assembly onto the flushometer body, and tighten the body and assembly together with a strap key provided within the kit. Remove the paper locking tab, and turn on the water.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can turn the control stop with a flathead screwdriver just before placing the flushometer body in place. Run the water, and this will flush out the system and remove debris that may have gathered.

  • Do not use thread tape or putty on a flushometer. They are specifically designed to be fitted without the aid of foreign agents.
