How to Locate a URL Owner

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires all domain names to be registered for it to be recognized as unique on the internet. Domain registrars maintain a public database of the contact information of all the domain names they register. This database is kept public and is available to be searched by others for the resolution of technical problems and to permit enforcement of consumer protection, trademark, and other laws. Domain names can also be registered as private. In such cases, the URL owner's contact details are not displayed. Instead, the contact detail of the privacy protection firm is displayed. All communications to the URL owner would have to go through them.

Instructions

  1. Locate a URL Owner

    • 1

Go to the DomainTools website (see the Resources).

    • 2

Locate the URL owner. Enter the URL in the "Enter a Domain Name to Lookup" box (for example, www.ehow.com). Click the "Lookup" button.

    • 3

Click on the "Lookup" button. The whois information of ehow is private (Whois Privacy Protection Service, Inc.) and all communication would have to go through their agent. The phone number and postal address also belongs to the agent.

    • 4

Click on the "Site Profile" tab to get details about the website and know the website rank.

    • 5

Click on the "Registration" tab to find out the registrar name, domain expiry date, and name server details.

    • 6

Click on the "Server Stats" tab to know the IP address of the website, IP location, and domain status.

    • 7

Click on the "My Whois" tab to customize the whois view.
