How to Replace Residential Cooktop Grates

Residential cooktop grates get damaged by everyday use and may need to be replaced. These grates can often be replaced with identical ones from the manufacturer. You could also choose to change the style or functionality of your cooktop by choosing aftermarket grates that are made in standard sizes to fit many different models.     • 1

      Turn all the knobs of the cooktop to off and pull them off if they are in the way of accessing the grates.

      Measure the size of all the existing grates on the cooktop and refer to the owner's manual to find corresponding part numbers.

      Contact the manufacturer of the cooktop to order replica replacement grates or visit a hardware or cooking store to find matching grates made by other manufacturers.

      Remove and discard the damaged or broken grates and clean the vacated area with a soft cloth and grease-cutting, all-purpose cleaner.

      Slide the new grates into position and test their fit and stability by placing a large heavy pot on them.
