1
Harvest your rice plants upon maturity. Rice typically comes to maturity in about four months. You will know your plants are ready when the green color starts to turn tan and when the tops begin to droop. Cut the stalks about 4 inches from the ground.
-
2
Wrap the stalks loosely in newspaper and place them in a warm, dry location to dry for at least two weeks or until the plants turn completely brown.

3
Thresh the plants to husk the rice. Place the plants on a sheet that has been spread out on the ground. Separate the grain by working bunches of stalks in your hand like working bread dough, by hitting it with sticks, paddles or stones or by trampling on it with your feet.
-
4
Remove the stalks, leaves and any other debris from the sheet so only the grains are left.
-
5
Spread the grains out on cookie sheets and place them in the oven at 175 degrees for one hour.
-
6
Winnow your grains. Remove the hulls that encase the rice by either rolling it in your fingers to loosen the hull and extract the rice, by wrapping the grains in a sheet and beating it with a stick, or by rubbing the grains on a large, broad, rough stone.
