How to Restore Synthetic Hair Pieces

Synthetic hair pieces are made of monofilaments that resemble human hair. Although these pieces cannot be styled with high heat or blow dryers, you can purchase this type of hair piece pre-styled and in the texture of your choice. The monofilament hair will maintain the curl, wave and texture without styling. Although relatively easy to upkeep, synthetic hair pieces will experience noticeable damage after about a week of wear. Using products designed specifically for synthetic hair, you can restore a monofilament fiber hair piece or wig quite easily. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Cleaning

    • 1

Shampoo the synthetic hair piece carefully. Do not shampoo roughly since this can cause the hair to tangle. Shampooing is important in removing oil and product buildup on the hair piece. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

    • 2

Condition the hair using a light conditioner made specifically for synthetic hair. Run the conditioner through the hair from the roots to the ends, ensuring complete coverage. Rinse with lukewarm water.

    • 3

Place the hair piece on the wig block, and let it dry. Never brush wet synthetic hair; this will cause irreversible damage and tangling. If necessary, gently use a wide-tooth comb on the piece to smooth out the hair.

    Restoration

    • 4

Attach the hair piece to your head. This will make it easier to brush and straighten the synthetic hair.

    • 5

Clip one side of the hair up. Let a three- to four-inch section of hair down from the bottom portion of the hair piece. Brush the section of hair through with a paddle brush.

    • 6

Spray the wig restorer over the section of hair until fully coated. Brush through with the paddle brush.

    • 7

Set the large barrel curling iron to the lowest setting. If your curling iron does not have temperature settings, do not use it. Barrels on the lowest setting should be very warm but not hot enough to burn the skin.

    • 8

Place the barrel at the root of the section of hair, and pull through quickly to straighten the hair. Keep in mind that even though the curling iron is on low, too much exposure to heat will make the synthetic hair melt.

    • 9

Brush through with the paddle brush, and push the hair back over your shoulder. Repeat steps 1 through 6 until you have treated the entire hair piece.
