How to Resurface Fiberglass Pools

Resurfacing a fiberglass pool can make an old pool look brand new. Fiberglass pools are coated with a fiberglass gel coat that comes in many different colors. The gel coat acts as paint and a protective layer, with additives that protect from ultra violet rays. A fresh coat of gel coat will last 15 to 20 years before it needs resurfacing again. All gel coating supplies can be found at your local marine supply store.

Instructions

    • 1

Drain all of the water from the pool and let it dry out.

    • 2

Put on a respirator, and sand the entire surface of the pool using 200-grit sandpaper and an electric sander. Scuff the entire surface until there is no shine left.

    • 3

Remove any dust, dirt, or debris from the pool. Wipe the entire surface clean using rags and acetone.

    • 4

Tape the perimeter of the pool off, and any lights that are in the pool using painters tape.

    • 5

Pour the gel coat into a 5-gallon bucket, leaving room to stir the gel coat. Add the recommended amount of hardener, according to the containers. Mix the gel coat and hardener together using a 2-foot long mixing drill attachment on an electric drill.

    • 6

Apply the first layer of gel coat using a 9-inch felt roller. Saturate the felt roller with a lot of gel coat and roll it on thick. Cover the entire pool and let the first coat cure until it is completely hard. Apply the second and final coat to the pool and let the gel coat cure for 24 hours before putting water in the pool.
