1
Walk from room to room. Carry measuring tape, a pen and a notebook to take notes on ideas and observations about the windows. Measure the windows to help give you a better idea of what type of window coverings to use.
-
2
Look for pictures of window coverings. Tear these pages out of magazines or make copies of them from your computer.
-
-
3
Take the style of your home into account. Do not choose elegant, long draperies for a country-style house.
-
4
Take into consideration the architecture on the inside of your home. Choose short valances for bay windows.
-
5
Decide if you want your window coverings to block out light or just provide a lot of privacy from close neighbors. Choose longer, heavier lined drapes for these types of rooms.
-
6
Choose café-style curtains for windows where you want some privacy, but also want to allow the light to come in. Keep in mind that café curtains work well in kitchens and breakfast nooks.
-
7
Take pictures of your windows without any coverings on them. Take these pictures to a seamstress to give her your ideas to allow her to see how the coverings would fit on the windows and possibly give you some alternative ideas.

Visit the fabric store. Get some samples to bring home and examine alongside your décor. Make sure the fabric matches other things in the room and complements them.

Tips & Warnings
Keep your budget in mind while considering your purchase. Heavy, long, lined draperies cost a great deal more than unlined, lighter-weight curtains. Refer back to your measurements to figure out how much fabric you will need for each window to help you decide on the perfect style of window treatments for your home and budget.
