How to Set up a Hat Table at a Craft Fair

Displaying hats in a group can be tricky. Just laying them out on a table won't be very interesting, and the hats take up a lot of space, so you'll run out of room quickly. They can also get jumbled and crushed this way. However, with a few supplies, some preparation, and mindfulness of a few key points, you can create arresting and organized hat displays at a craft fair in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the table (or tables, if needed). Put the tablecloth over the table. Make sure you have a designated spot for your cash box behind the table.

    • 2

Place your hat stands around the tables. If you have a tall floor hat stand, put it next to the table. Smaller hat stands can be scattered around the table. Remember that a good display has several different heights for the most visual interest. Set your hats on the stands, keeping in mind how the hats are grouped. For example, you might group all straw hats together, or all green hats, and so forth.

    • 3

Scatter the mannequin heads around the tables and put the most interesting hats on them. These will be focal points. Styrofoam mannequin heads for wigs or hats can be purchased for under $10, or you can look around for more expensive vintage heads. Vintage heads are available from many different eras; flapper heads and Art Deco heads with molded hair are two popular options. Just search the Internet for the style you want.

    • 4

Decide where to put the mirror. If your booth has a wall, suspend it on the wall behind the table. You might also be able to lean up a large mirror. A full-length mirror on a stand is also a good bet. Be sure to place the mirror in a spot where people won't accidentally knock it over.

Tips & Warnings

  • To add height to a table, you can also put a box or two under the tablecloth.
