How to Make a Cat 5 Patch Cable

Ethernet technology was developed and implemented in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Ethernet has undergone several revisions and operates on many different types of media, including electrical, optical and wireless. Ethernet twisted pair technology uses copper wires that are twisted together to reduce electromagnetic interference from surrounding devices that may be producing an electromagnetic field. The internal connectors of Category 5 patch cables are color coded because they must be wired in the correct order. You can make a Category 5 patch cable with an Ethernet crimp tool.

Things You'll Need

  • Ethernet crimp tool
  • Category 5 Ethernet cable
  • RJ-45 modular plugs

Instructions

    • 1

Strip off approximately 1.5 inches of the outer shield at each end of the Category 5 Ethernet cable. Take care not to cut or nick any of the internal wires.

    • 2

Untwist the internal wires at both ends and arrange them in the following order: orange/white, orange, green/white, blue, blue/white, green, brown/white, brown.

    • 3

Use the Ethernet crimp tool to evenly cut the internal wires approximately one half-inch from the end of the outer shield.

    • 4

Insert the wires into a modular RJ-45 end.

    • 5

Insert the RJ-45 connector into the Ethernet crimp tool and squeeze the handle to lock the internal wires into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Creating your own Cat5 patch cables takes practice. You may have to attempt the cable creation a few times before it works properly.

  • Optionally check the completed cable with an Ethernet tester.

  • Ethernet patch cables can not be over 100 meters in length.
