How to Cover a Lampshade with Ribbon

Covering a lampshade with ribbon is a simple process and there are several different methods for doing so. However, this project does require a certain level of attention in order to ensure neat and uniform results. It is a very flexible project that can easily be modified to make your lampshade completely unique, and if you shop around you can find inexpensive spools of very nice ribbon to use.

Instructions

  1. Wrapping Method

    • 1

Glue the end of the ribbon (leave it on the spool for easier maneuvering) to the inside of the top edge of the lampshade. Tape this in place to keep it secure while you're working.

    • 2

Pull the ribbon down the outside of the lampshade to the bottom edge, and then loop it inside the lampshade and up through the top edge. Move the ribbon slightly to the right, overlapping the first ribbon loop, and then pull it down to the bottom and up through the inside to the top again.

    • 3

Repeat the process in Step 2, working your way around the lampshade until the entire shade is covered. Remember to overlap the top slightly more than the bottom if you have a tapered lampshade.

    • 4

Once the entire lampshade is covered, glue the other end of the ribbon to the inside of the lampshade and tape this until it dries.

    Strips Method

    • 5

Cut strips of ribbon that are about 1 inch longer than your lampshade is tall.

    • 6

Glue one end of the ribbon strip to the top inside edge of the lampshade. Then, smooth the ribbon down the side of the shade and glue the other end to the bottom inside edge.

    • 7

Starting at the top, slightly overlap the first ribbon strip with another ribbon strip (with this method you can use different colors, sizes, and patterns of ribbon), and glue this ribbon strip at the top and bottom edges in the same fashion as you did the first strip.

    • 8

Continue to glue ribbon strips around the lampshade until the entire shade is covered. If desired, weave or vary the overlap of the ribbon strips to create a unique pattern.
