How to Freeze Mashed Potatoes for Pierogies

Many people do not realize that they can freeze mashed potatoes for use in pierogies. You can freeze and reheat them to use as a side dish for regular meals. Freezing leftover mashed potatoes will allow you make pierogies whenever you desire. Frozen mashed potatoes will keep in the freezer for up to a month before you see any adverse effects, such as separation.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Mashed potatoes
    • Cookie sheet
    • 4 oz. ice cream scoop
    • Plastic wrap
    • Zip-close freezer bags

        Cook the potatoes, and mash them using your favorite recipe. Allow the potatoes to cool.

        Use an ice cream scoop to scoop and place mounds of mashed potatoes on a cookie sheet. Leave at least 1/4 inch of space between each mound.

        Cover the cookie sheet with plastic wrap, and place in the freezer. Leave the mashed potatoes in the freezer overnight or until frozen solid.

        Transfer the frozen potato mounds to zip-close freezer bags. Do this as quickly as possible so that the mashed potatoes do not begin to melt.

        Place the bags of mashed potatoes back into the freezer. Use as needed by thawing in the refrigerator for several hours. Each mound of mashed potatoes will yield approximately 1/2 cup.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If the potatoes appear a bit runny after thawing, add in a tablespoon or two of instant potato flakes to thicken them.

    • You can also simply freeze the potatoes in zip-close freezer bags or airtight containers, but this method gives you little control over the amount to thaw when needed for pierogies.

    • Freezing mashed potatoes allows you to make up more than enough for dinner tonight, and you can save the rest for pierogies or another meal.
