How to Improve Efficiency of a Pedometer

Pedometers are useful devices for tracking fitness when it comes to walking. It uses a mechanical sensor to count steps based on a body's movement and the impact on the ground from each step. To improve efficiency of a pedometer, you will need to choose the right style and know how to use it.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a traditional spring-levered pedometer if you are going to use it for faster paces. It will provide a more accurate result because it's easier for traditional pedometers to sense impact; the faster you walk, the more pronounced the impact.

    • 2

Choose an accelerometer pedometer that uses a strain gauge if you are a slow or moderate walker. This model is better at sensing impact at slow paces so will track your fitness more accurately.

    • 3

Use models with additional features such as calculating distance and calories burned. There are also models that can be set up to factor in height, gender and age into their calculation. Again, this helps to track your progress more efficiently and accurately.

    • 4

Use a protective cover for your pedometer to prevent accidental resetting. The pedometer's programming buttons should be covered and protected but still easily accessible. Look for pedometers with flip-open covers.

    • 5

Always wear the pedometer in the same place each time. Position spring-levered pedometers vertically and parallel to the ground, not tilted. Otherwise it will be inaccurate. The accelerometer pedometers offer more placement options, but always place it on a comfortable, nonrestrictive spot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Distance and calorie calculations have many variables involved, which can result in inaccurate data. Use them as estimates.
