How to Clean Septic Tank Filters

Septic tank filters have two purposes: to prevent sludge buildup inside the septic tank system (this sludge buildup can occupy space in your septic tank) and to make it easier for waste to travel out of the septic tank and into the general drainage field. In order for your septic tank's filter to be maximally effective, the filter must be periodically removed and cleaned. Note that your particular septic tank's engineering may cause variance in the process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Move to the outlet side of your septic tank. The septic tank's outlet is the side from which waste exits the septic tank (correspondingly, waste enters the septic tank from your house on the inlet side of the tank).

    • 2

Take off the outlet's lid using the screwdriver. Inside the outlet, you will notice a pipe that looks like a sideways T. This is known as the baffle; herein lies the filter. The filter generally can be identified by a handle extruding from the top of the baffle. Pull up on the handle to remove the filter.

    • 3

Use your hose or another spraying instrument in order to spray the waste off the filter; if you so desire, line up a container or garbage bag behind the filter to catch the waste.

    • 4

Replace the clean filter into the baffle. Reattach the outlet's lid and reinsert and tighten the cover's screws (if applicable).

Be sure to wear rubber gloves, goggles and long sleeves and pants. This is raw sewage, full of bacteria and contaminants - use caution. Carefully rinse the filter into the tank avoiding any splashing. Keep children and pets away.
