How to Polish Ceramic Coatings

Ceramic coatings are used on exhaust components in order to keep this area of your car from overheating. They are extremely durable, and as long as you do not try to sand them or attack them with steel wool, you can technically polish them with just about anything. However, when it comes to car maintenance, simpler is better in most cases, so it's best to polish your ceramic coatings using a simple combination of soap and water.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix up a polishing solution. Fill the spray bottle 2/3 full of hot water and add 5 drops of mild liquid detergent. Shake the bottle to mix up the solution.

    • 2

Spray the cleaning solution on the ceramic-coated parts. Letting the solution sit on the parts while you clean will make it more effective.

    • 3

Wipe down the parts. The first time through, the solution will be doing more cleaning than polishing, which is fine. Use firm pressure and scrub if necessary to remove dirt and grime.

    • 4

Dip a new, clean rag in the cleaning solution. This time, you will be polishing. Use firm pressure and circular motions to make the metal shine.

    • 5

Dry off the ceramic-coated parts. Use a clean, dry cloth. At this point, you are buffing the coating to really make it shine, so switch out if your cloth gets dirty (which it should not) or damp (which it might). Use firm pressure and circular motions to get the most shine possible out of the ceramic coating.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you absolutely must use a polishing agent, use aluminum polish only. Chrome cleaners and polishes contain caustic ingredients that will damage the coating.
