  1. Coloring Hair

      Wash your at least a day before you color it. Use a moisturizing shampoo as well as a deep conditioner that you leave on for a few minutes.

      Do a patch test on your hair. Mix a small amount of developer with a small amount of color. Section a small amount of hair from beneath your top layer. Apply the color mixture to the small section of hair. Wait 20 minutes to see if the color has taken and if you like the color. If the color has not taken, wait another 10 to 15 minutes and check again. If it looks good, wash the section and proceed with coloring your hair.

      Prepare your hair. Take the pre-conditioner out of the box and apply it to your hair. Leave it on. It will help to retain moisture and color on your hair.

      Protect your skin and clothing. Put a towel around your neck and shoulders. Use a dark-colored towel, if possible, so any spilled color will not show. Put gloves on and read all of the directions.

      Mix color. Take the applicator bottle, developer and color out of box. Pour the developer into the applicator bottle, up to the 2-ounce line. Pour the color into applicator bottle. Shake well until color is fully mixed.

      Section your hair into four parts. You can use a clip to separate the sections. Make a center part from forehead to nape of neck, then another one for one ear to the other over the top of the head. Clip the sections loosely.

      Apply the color to your roots. Squeeze color from applicator bottle onto the roots of each section. Use the detachable applicator brush tip and fingers to work color onto the roots. hen use the brush tip to apply color to your bangs, the roots along the sides of your face and behind your ears, and the hair at the nape of your neck.

      Unclip your sectioned hair. Remove the brush tip from the applicator bottle and replace it with the other tip. Pour the remaining color all over your hair. Use your fingers to work the color onto the length of your hair all the way to the ends. Make sure all of your hair is covered, especially on the back of your head.

      Wait. Let the color set for the amount of time determined by the color test you did earlier, or use the recommended time on box. Check the color after the prescribed time and see if color has taken. If not wait another 2 to 5 minutes.

      Rinse your hair with warm water and apply conditioner. You may use the conditioner that came with the color or your own favorite conditioner. Follow the instructions on the product package. Rinse the conditioner with cool water to set the color.
