How to Set Up a CNA Training Program

Certified Nurse Assistant training programs prepare students to perform basic nursing tasks with the supervision of a Registered or Licensed Practical Nurse. Follow state guidelines to set up a program (typically 6 to 12 weeks long) to offer at your school or health care facility.

Instructions

    • 1

Research state requirements. The State Nurse Aide Registry (or State Licensing Board) for your state provides guidelines. For example, the Nurse Aide Registry Program (described on the Mass.gov website) governs the approval and monitoring of CNA programs and oversees clinical skill evaluations as well as written or oral exams. It also maintains the Nurse Aide Registry, which lists individuals qualified to work as CNAs. This database also documents abuse and neglect and coordinates reimbursement of training and testing covered by Medicaid.

    • 2

Design or customize your instructional CNA program to prepare students to carry out nursing tasks. Your presentation materials should cover basic rules such as hand washing, adhering to privacy, safety protocols such as how to move patients (for example from a wheelchair to a bed), providing a bedpan for use with dignity, helping with a patient's comfort needs (such as combing hair or positioning pillows and blankets) and taking vital signs (such as taking a temperature).

    • 3

Arrange for students to complete their clinical requirements by setting up placements at local health care facilities.

    • 4

Provide opportunities to practice for the competency tests, both clinical and written or oral exams.

    • 5

Prepare to direct students on how and where to take the state administered test. For example, if your school is in Massachusetts, instruct students to call the Massachusetts Nurse Aide Testing Office.

    • 6

Ensure that qualified students register with governing bodies. Local laws prohibit institutions from hiring CNAs who are not registered.

    • 7

Assist students in obtaining employment by providing resume development support and preparing individuals for job interviews.
