How to Get Proper Tempo in Golf Swing

One of the most common problems among amateur golfers and even some veterans is controlling swing tempo. Many golfers try to swing too hard or too fast, thinking the ball will travel farther with this approach. Swinging hard and fast does increase distance, but without the proper swing tempo to fit your body, the chances of your shot being consistently accurate dramatically decrease. Practicing a few techniques will help with your swing tempo.

Practice your swing on the range with a bucket of balls. Start first by swinging only about 75 percent of your full swing to get a feel for your current swing's tempo. Try to make your swing one fluid motion, with no stops, stutters or dramatic acceleration or deceleration. Think of a child on a swing. They never stop at the top; it is gravity that pulls them down and increases the swing speed slightly.

Think of your backswing as being close to the same speed as your downswing. A player with a very quick backswing should not have a very slow downswing and vice versa. Trying to keep your entire swing about the same speed is a step in the right direction to gaining a controlled swing tempo.

Distribute your weight evenly between your right and left foot while practicing. Correct balance is another integral part to your swing tempo. For a right-handed golfer, 75 percent of his weight should be on his right foot during the backswing, and at least 75 percent should be on his left foot during his downswing.

Follow through on your swing so your hands are extended directly towards your target after making contact with the ball. A proper finish to your swing goes a long way in improving your swing tempo.

Keep practicing until your swing tempo feels natural. Since every golfer swings at a different speed, it is important that you do what feels comfortable. The ultimate goal is for your swing to feel effortless. With enough practice, a controlled tempo can dramatically improve your game.
