How to Build a Template for a Router Table Base
A router table is almost a must if you use any of the large profile bits available. There are many router plates available to use, and most will all install in the same fashion. Following a few simple steps will make the installation easy.

- Router plate
- Table saw
- MDF (medium-density fiberboard)
- 3/4-inch fence material
- Double-sided tape
- Router with collar and 1/2-inch straight bit
- Jigsaw

Put the router plate on the table where you want to install it. Check for any obstructions under the router table base.

Attach to the router template with double-sided tape where you want to locate it on the extension tabletop.

Cut some 3-inch wide strips of medium-density fiberboard with a table saw.

Attach two pieces of the MDF with double-sided tape along the outside edge of the router plate. Start with the long sides of the router plate.

Measure and cut two more pieces to attach along the short edges of the router plate.

Remove the router plate.

Cut the router tabletop with a router with a 1/2-inch collar and straight bit. Set the depth of cut to the thickness of the router plate plus 1/8 inch. This will provide the recess for the router plate.

Remove the MDF template and drill a hole inside of the tabletop, centered where the plate is located.

Cut out the center of the top, staying inside of where you used the router to recess the router plate. Use a jigsaw for this step.

Install the router plate and adjust it to be level with the top of the table per manufacturer's instructions.

Tips & Warnings
If you plan on using the router table to make mostly moldings and edge work, the plate should be placed toward the front of the table. However, if you plan on milling large panels that need support, place the router and router plate toward the rear of the table. Alternatively, you could place it in the middle to do both and add a miter track in the tabletop.
Always wear safety glasses.
If the tabletop is made of fiberboard, wear a dust mask.
