How to Adjust Skin Tones With CS3

When a photographer takes a photograph of a person, highlights often detract from the natural feel of the picture. The subject's skin can look blotchy and uneven due to glare from the sun, flash or other source of light. Photoshop CS3 can be used to even out the skin tone to create the perfect photograph. While there are many ways to even out skin tone with Photoshop, one of the easiest methods is described in this guide.

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Open the photograph that needs editing with Photoshop CS3.

    • 2

Select the area of the photograph where the skin tone needs to be evened out. The easiest way to do this is to use the "Lasso" tool (located in the tool box on the left of the screen) and draw around the affected area, including a smaller border of space between the affected area and the normal skin tone to help with blending to two areas.

    • 3

Select the normal skin tone color by moving the "Eyedropper" tool (located in the toolbox) over a section of normal skin and click to select that color.

    • 4

Create a new layer by selecting "Layers" from the menu bar and choosing "New."

    • 5

Select "Edit" from the menu bar and choose "Fill."

    • 6

Select "Foreground Color" under the Contents section of the fill box and press "OK."

    • 7

Blend the two layers using the "Color" blend option by selecting the drop-down menu directly under the "Layers" tab on the right side of the program. Choose the "Color" option.

    • 8

Increase or decrease the opacity level of the layer until it looks like a natural skin tone that fits well with the photo. Simply change the percentage noted in the box labeled "Opacity," located next to the drop down menu described in step 7.

    • 9

Save the new photo by clicking "File" and choosing "Save As."

    • 10

Select the format you wish to save your file in--jpeg is a good choice--by choosing the appropriate format from the drop-down menu labeled "Format."

    • 11

      Click "Save."

Tips & Warnings

  • The technique described here is called retouching and is used by most professional photographers. In addition to be used to even out the skin tone to adjust for excess light, it can also be used to hide blemishes on the skin.
