Instructions

  1. Treating Dry Skin

    • 1

Wash hands and/or feet in warm water using a mild soap and rinsing well just before going to bed. Though a hot shower or bath feels wonderful, it will dissolve the natural oils in your skin. Instead, use cool-to-warm water.

    • 2

Pat your skin dry with a soft towel. You want to blot the water from your skin, not to wring it out. The skin will absorb some of the moisture from bathing naturally.

    • 3

Spread a thin layer of petroleum jelly over your hands. Be sure to get the webbing between your fingers and from finger tips to wrists. Do the same for your feet and ankles. This will help to seal in moisture from your washing and will encourage rehydration and healing.

    • 4

Pull on a pair of clean socks and gloves. This will not only protect your hands and feet, but will also protect your sheets from the petroleum jelly.

    • 5

Gently wipe off any remaining jelly the following morning. You will find most of it has absorbed into your skin during the night. Dry, cracked areas will probably show signs of improvement.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a moisturizer within three minutes of leaving the shower according to The University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

  • Wear gloves when using household chemicals or doing dishes.

  • Avoid moisturizers and lotions that contain alcohol because they will dry out your skin.
