How to Grow a Skunk Cabbage Plant
Skunk cabbage is a perennial plant that likes to grow at the edges of streams, ponds and marshes. It produces its own heat and as such is one of the first plants to bloom in late winter. The plant is called skunk cabbage because when the leaves are injured they give off a skunk-like odor. The skunk cabbage can be grown throughout the northern United States as long as moist soil is available. Does this Spark an idea?

Plant the seed in a pot in mid-winter. Use a soil medium that will hold moisture well, such as a loamy soil. Plant the seed about 1/4 inch deep and pat down the soil. Water the seed thoroughly.

2
Place the pot outside in a cold frame for the winter. This usually consists of a wooden box with windows on the top as a lid, forming a little protective greenhouse. Place the cold frame in a sunny spot and keep the soil moist. The seed will begin to germinate in about one to two months.
