How to Replace Tuning Pegs

It's much easier to replace a tuning peg on a guitar or other string instrument than it is to try and repair it. If a tuning peg on your guitar has stopped functioning correctly or has broken off entirely, you can purchase a new tuning peg and replace it yourself. Knowing how to replace tuning pegs is not only a cheaper option than taking your instrument to a repair shop, but it also saves you the time traveling there.

Things You'll Need

• Tuning peg(s)
• Wood putty
• Reamer

Instructions

1. Loosen the guitar string so that it does not snap or injure you when you replace the peg. Do this by turning the tuning peg to loosen the string or remove it entirely.

2. Unscrew the peg until it comes off of the guitar.

3. Screw the new peg into the hole. Make sure that when you purchase the new peg, that it is either the same size as the old peg or a bit bigger.

4. Place a small amount of wood putty into the hole if the peg is too small or use the reamer to make the hole a bit bigger if your new peg is far too large for the hole.

5. Replace the string around the tuning peg if you removed it in Step 1.
