How to Plant Clivia Seedlings
The clivia is a plant native to South Africa and produces both upright and pendulous orange and yellow florets. - Distilled water
- Small bowl
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Small planter
- Perlite
- Vermiculite
- Clean towel

Remove the membrane surrounding the seeds. The membrane will feel like a slick or slippery skin, and when you rub the seed between your fingers, the membrane will slide over the seed. By gently pinching the seed, it should pierce out of the membrane. Set the membrane seeds aside until all membranes have been removed.

Soak the seeds overnight in a bowl of room temperature distilled water.

Sterilized the clean seeds by placing them for a few seconds in a sterilization solution. According to Dr. Gert Venter from the Agricultural Research Center in South Africa, you should use the following sterilization solution: One part 3 percent hydrogen peroxide mixed with two parts water. After dropping them into a bowl containing the sterilization solution, take them out of the bowl and let them dry on a clean towel.

Place a mixture of equal parts perlite and vermiculite inside of a small pot with draining holes at the bottom. You should fill the mixture up to 1 inch below the top of the planting pot.

Put the seeds on the surface of the perlite and vermiculite mixture. The seeds can touch each other, but try to prevent them from overlapping. If there are too many seeds to fit in one planting pot, either start a second planter or use a larger planting pot.

Cover the top of the pot tightly with a plastic wrap and place the pot into a tray with slightly raised sides (a baking dish would work well).

Place the pot and tray into a warm area of your home. Do not put it in direct sunlight. The ideal conditions for clivia are a temperature of approximately 75 degrees F and 60 percent humidity.

Pour water into the tray once a week (do not uncover the plastic wrap). The water will enter the pot from the drainage holes.
