How to Create a Web TV Channel Online for Free

Since podcasting became popular circa 2004, the Internet has become a place ripe with modes of entertainment -- and that entertainment is now in the hands of content creators, not network executives. Gone are the days of relying on traditional television networks to fund and develop your show. If you have an idea for a program, you can make it yourself and create your own TV channel on the Internet for free. You can do live streaming, or on-demand videos using several free websites.

    • 1

Evaluate the many choices for live broadcasting. The most popular options are UStream.tv and Stickam.com. Review the features for each service to decide which is right for you.

    • 2

Sign up with the website you chose to use. When filling out the signup form, pay special attention to the username you choose. This will become your permanent URL. For example, the web address for your broadcast will be "www.stickam.com/your-username."

    • 3

Decide what your audio and video set up will be. Most newer computers have built in webcams and microphones that will work for a live broadcast. If you want to add better quality, invest in a USB digital video camera and a microphone that will attach to the camera.

    • 4

Choose the "Profile" button ("Edit your profile" in Stickam) to customize your page, fill out information that you want your viewers to see about you, and describe your show.

    • 5

Choose the "Go Live" or "Start Broadcasting" button from the control panel of Stickam or UStream.

    • 6

Select the video and audio source when prompted. The website's software will automatically detect any cameras and microphones attached to the computer; simply give them permission to broadcast.

    • 7

Select your chat options when prompted. Both Stickam and Ustream allow you to enable a chatroom while you are broadcasting. You can turn the chat off, allow anyone to chat or only allow members of the site to chat.

    • 8

Click the "Broadcast" button in the software to begin your show.

    On-Demand Broadcasting

    • 9

Sign up for a free account at www.blip.tv.

    • 10

Click the "Upload" button in navigation at the top of the page.

    • 11

Browse for the videos on your computer that you want your viewers to be able to watch and click the "open" button to begin the upload.

    • 12

Wait for the video to be converted and transcoded for use on the Blip servers. It can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours for this process to complete. While you wait, proceed to step five.

    • 13

Click on the "Dashboard" button in the top navigation.

    • 14

Customize the show page by filling out the boxes for your show description, page title, and other relevant information.

    • 15

Customize the flash player that will play your videos by choosing the "Player Manager" button in the dashboard. Here, you will be able to choose custom colors and styles for your player.

    • 16

Ensure your videos have been uploaded and are appearing in your show player, located at USERNAME.blip.tv before promoting your show.

Tips & Warnings

  • UStream allows you to archive your shows for future use, thus eliminating the need to use Blip if you want to have a combination of live and on-demand broadcasts.

  • In order to use Blip, you will need to have already-produced content. You cannot record a show via the Blip website.
