How to Hook Up GPS to Radio

Newer Garmin GPS devices include on-board entertainment centers with music, audiobooks and photo storage. The single speaker on a GPS device supports turn-by-turn voice navigation but provides an inferior listening experience for music and audiobooks. If your GPS includes an FM transmitter you can hook up your GPS to your car radio to listen to the on-board entertainment center in stereo. If your GPS does not include an FM transmitter, you may be able to purchase an FM transmitter mount for the make and model of your GPS.

Instructions

Manual Tuning for Garmin GPS

1. Select "Volume -- Audio Output -- FM Transmitter" to display the "Frequency Adjust" screen.

2. Select an unused (static) FM station on your car radio.

3. Press the + or -- buttons on your GPS to select the same station to transmit the GPS audio through your stereo.

Automatic Tuning for Garmin GPS

1. Select "Volume -- Audio Output -- FM Transmitter -- Auto Tune."

2. Note the station your GPS selects.

3. Select the same FM station on your car radio to transmit the GPS audio through your stereo.

Tips & Warnings

• If your radio begins to pick up a station as you travel, search for another unused frequency and reset your GPS and FM radio.
