How to Build Your Own Banana Hanger
Before buying a banana stand, try making one yourself with tools found in your garage. Plastic banana stands eventually break due to the constant pressure from the weight of the bananas. Wood banana stands can maintain the weight without cracking under pressure. Making your own stand will require patience, and minor adjustments in the design and construction should prevent the stand from tipping over easily. - Table saw
- 7-by-5 piece of lumber (1 inch thick)
- 1½ feet of lumber plank (1 inch thick)

- Large screw-in metal hook

Cut out the wood dimensions from the lumber with a table saw. Use lumber that is at least 1 to 2 inches thick. You will need a 7 by 5 inch piece of lumber for the base. This will be a rectangle block that will stand 1 inch high due to its thickness. You can adjust these sizes accordingly, but you want the width of the banana hanger's base to be similar to a rectangle to provide stability. Next, cut out 1½ feet of lumber for the stand. Ensure that the width of the stand is no larger than 2 inches. The lumber used for the stand does not have to be straight, but it needs to be thick enough to support the weight of your bananas. Again, the lumber will need to be at least 1 inch in thickness.

Sand down the wood. Once you cut the lumber to the right dimensions, sand it down with sandpaper. Ensure that the bottom of the base is smooth so that it will be stable once you hang the bananas.

Drill small pilot holes through the base and the stand. These holes will need to match in order to attach both these pieces together. Pilot holes prevent large screws from slipping, and they will allow you to affix the lumber pieces together easily. The pilot holes are smaller than the actual drill holes, so ensure that you use a small drill bit.

Run the screws from under the base up into the stand. Place the stand centered on the left side of your base (the short end). You will need to lay the banana holder on its side and securely hold the base against the stand. Consider using a clamp to help hold the two pieces together. Ensure that the screws are tight and secure. You will need to use screws that are at least 2 inches long to ensure that they go through the base and into the stand.

Drill another pilot hole in the top end of your stand. The drill bit will need to be smaller than the screw on the end of your hook to ensure that the hook will be secure.

Begin screwing the hook in until it is tight. Ensure that the hook is facing upwards so it can hold the bananas.

Check the balance of the banana hanger by hanging bananas on the hook. You may need to adjust the measurements of the wood depending on your construction design.

Stain the base and stand with wood stain. Allow the stain to set for the recommended amount of time before using the banana hanger.

Making your own banana hanger is challenging. This project will take 3 to 4 hours from start to finish, but with a little experimentation you will be able to build your own banana hanger.
It is possible to make the stand into an oval base that extends more toward the middle to help create needed balance.
Instead of staining your banana hanger, consider painting the wood to match your kitchen décor.
