How to Fold a Flag for a Display Case

An American flag in a display case not only honors a veteran of the armed forces, but demonstrates reverence and respect for the flag of their country. At the funeral of a veteran, the flag is draped on the coffin, then properly folded and presented to the veteran's family in a moving ceremony. The traditional shape of a folded flag is a triangle with only the blue star field visible. Triangular cases are manufactured for the express purpose of displaying a folded flag.

Instructions

  1. Folding the Flag

    • 1

Facing a partner, stand at opposite ends of the flag, holding all four corners so that the flag is parallel to the floor. Fold the flag in half lengthwise, two times, with the blue field always on the outside of the flag. You should now have a long, narrow flag with blue showing on one end.

    • 2

At the striped end of the flag, take the corner in the left hand and fold it over the top in a triangle shape. Line up the end of the flag so that it lies exactly along the right-hand folds. There will now be a triangle at one end with a side perpendicular to the stripes.

    • 3

Flip this triangle over along the perpendicular seam. You will still have a triangle shape on top, but now the edge across the flag will be the angle. Continue to flip the folded triangle down the length of the flag.

    • 4

There will be a small portion of the flag left over at the end of the blue field. This small piece can be easily tucked inside the last fold.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your time when folding a flag. The more precisely you fold it, the nicer it will look displayed in its case. Add a brass nameplate in honor or memory of an armed forces service member for a final elegant touch.
