Things You'll Need
- Bucket
- Ammonia
- Measuring cup
- Damp cloth or sponge
- Fine steel wool
- Toothbrush
- All-purpose cleaner

Open all windows and doors for adequate ventilation. Mix 1 to 2 cups of clear ammonia into 1 gallon of water. Use cool water to limit the paint fumes.

Wipe basic stains off of the walls using a damp sponge or cloth, dipped in the ammonia solution. Rinse the wall with clean water to ensure all ammonia residue is completely removed. Leaving any residue on the wall may affect a later coat of paint.

Use fine steel wool and an old toothbrush for heavier stains and marks. Apply pressure only to the stain area and avoid the surrounding paint. Take the steel wool and wrap around a small amount part of the toothbrush; the handle is ideal. Lightly rub to remove the stain. Spray the area with all-purpose cleaner for additional cleaning power.
