Shake your Advair unit up and down for five seconds first thing in the morning. Exhale once and place your mouth on the mouth piece. Push the top of the canister down and inhale slowly as the medication is dispensed inside your mouth. Hold your breath for 10 seconds or as long as possible, then breath normally. Wait a half minute, shake the canister again for five seconds and repeat usage a second time. Use the inhaler two times in the evening about 12 hours later, or as directed by your physician.

    • 3

After each use, rinse your mouth thoroughly with mouthwash for up to 30 seconds. Spit the mouthwash out and rinse your mouth again.

Tips & Warnings

  • The above dosage is for people that are 12 years old or over. Ask your physician how much Advair your child should use. Make sure you inhale deeply after spraying the inhaler in your mouth so that the medication gets into your lungs. Advair is unlike Pro Air or inhalers that are used whenever you need it to relieve asthma or breathing problems. Advair must be used twice per day to be effective in preventing shortness of breath or other symptoms. It is known to relieve breathing problems related to both mucus build-up and constricted airways due to muscle contractions. It is important to rinse your mouth out after using Advair because the medication can cause yeast infections and sores in your mouth such as thrush.

  • Never use Advair if you have any known allergies to fluticasone or salmeterol. These medications are also known under the brand names of Flovent and Serevent. Do not exceed the recommended dosage as this can potentially cause side effects such as nausea, headaches, an increased heart rate, seizures or even worse overdose symptoms.
