How to Decoupage Outlet Covers

Decorative designer outlet covers are a nice touch for your home decor, but considering the cost of replacing multiple covers in each room, a lot of people pass on the expense. There's no need to purchase decorative outlet covers, however, when with a simple technique you can custom decorate your existing plates, or plain, inexpensive ones found at hardware stores. Instructions

    • 1

Select some images for your decoupage project. These can be wrapping or shelf paper scraps, magazine pictures or pictures from your computer printed onto typing paper. Cut down the pictures to the size you need. You can use one picture slightly larger than the outlet cover, or several smaller cut-outs.

    • 2

Cover your work area with newspaper. Use a sponge brush to brush some decoupage medium onto the back of your pictures. If the pictures extend past the edges of the cover, fold over the edges and press them to the back of your plate.

    • 3

Lay your switch plate face down on your work surface. Use a craft knife to cut an "X" shape in the holes for the outlets. Fold over the flaps and affix them flat to the back of your cover. Use your craft knife to make a small hole where the screws go and press the pictures down into the indentation.

    • 4

Brush two more coats of decoupage medium over the entire plate to cover the images. Allow it to dry between coats.

    • 5

Take your outlet cover outdoors. Cover your work area with newspaper. Spray the outlet cover with a clear coating of acrylic sealer. Allow it to dry.

    • 6

Check the flaps folded over the back of the outlet cover to be sure they are not sticking out. Glue them down with a dab of craft glue, hot glue or tape.

    • 7

Screw your outlet covers back onto your wall and enjoy their new look.
