Instructions

  1. Filtering Frying Oil

    • 1

Allow the cooking oil to cool completely before separating food particles from the oil. Hot oil can cause severe burns and can make storage containers melt or burst, depending on the materials from which they are made.

    • 2

Place a coffee filter on top of the jar. Slide a rubber band around the mouth of the jar and secure the filter to the jar. Make sure that the filter is not tight across the top. Keep the filter loose in the middle so that it hangs down into the jar.

    • 3

Slowly pour the oil through the filter. If the oil begins to accumulate, allow it to filter completely before adding more oil. If necessary, use a spoon to remove excess food from the filter before continuing the straining process.

    • 4

Carefully remove the rubber band from the jar's mouth. Keep one hand on the filter to prevent it from slipping. Remove the filter and discard the debris.

    • 5

Wipe the top of the jar with a paper towel. Remove excess oil from the jar. Oil residue can cause the lid to stick to the jar and prevent proper sealing. Seal the jar tightly; store the oil in a cool place. Do not store the oil on a stove.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sunflower oil, peanut oil, soy oil, safflower oil, almond oil, avocado oil, canola oil, vegetable oil and cottonseed oil are all good candidates for oil recycling.

  • Bacon grease doesn't have to be filtered. However, it can be filtered into a metal container while it is still hot. To filter hot bacon grease, place a metal strainer over the top of a metal container and slowly pour the grease through the strainer.

  • Oil that is used to fry fish is not recommended for recycling, as it takes on the flavor of the fish.

  • Do not filter bacon grease into glass jars. Hot bacon grease can cause the glass to shatter.
