Instructions

    • 1

Choose an organization to use for your hair donation. Popular hair donation companies include: Locks of Love, Wigs for Kids, Pantene Beautiful Lengths, Children with Hair Loss and the Childhood Leukemia Foundation. Check each organizations guidelines before cutting the hair. Most organizations want hair that is at least 10 inches long, is not chemically treated and has not been used with extensions, micro braids or dreadlocks.

    • 2

Thoroughly clean and condition the hair. Dry with a blow dryer and a wide-toothed comb. Do not add any products to the hair. Allow the natural tendency of the hair to emerge.

    • 3

Comb the hair until it is completely tangle free. Tie the hair with a hair elastic just below where the cut is to be made. For thick hair, divide the hair into several smaller sections.

    • 4

Have a friend or hair professional cut the ponytails off just above the hair elastics. Style your remaining hair however you wish. When finished, measure each clump of cut hair with a ruler and place each hair pony tail into its own separate bag. Write the length of the hair piece on the outside of the bag.

    • 5

Print the donation form from the charity's website. Follow the directions listed on the donation sheet for mailing the hair to the charity. Enclose your name and address with the hair. Most charities will send a thank you to all donors.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your hair is extremely curly, stretch the curls out when measuring. This provides a more accurate length measurement.

  • Always be careful when using scissors. It is very easy to cut a finger or ear if proper caution is not used.
