Sand any rough edges or seams of the bare hardwood floor with the sandpaper. You will not be covering the stain with a varnish as you usually do indoors, but you still want a smooth floor.

Sweep any dust or debris off the floor with a broom.

Open any windows or doors with a screen to allow a breeze to carrying the strong stain smell away. Also, place a fan in one doorway to help the drying process, as stain is applied thick to saturate the wood with color.

Apply stain in a corner of the room with the paint brush and work your way out of the room. Saturate the wood with the stain, but don't allow the stain to puddle.

Allow the room to dry for 24 hours. Re-apply a coat of stain every two years or as needed.
