How to Paint Installed Wrought Iron Railings
Wrought iron metal railings are an attractive addition to the decor of many houses, and properly cared for they can last for years. Painting is an important part of the maintenance cycle for metal railings, and should be taken care of on a regular basis.
Things You'll Need
- Wire brush or wire wheel
- Medium-grit sandpaper
- Fine-grit sandpaper
- Rag
- Water
- Paint
- Small paint brush

Prepare the surface. Remove any rust on the rails with a wire brush or wire wheel attached to a drill, then sand with sandpaper until the rusted area is clean down to bare metal.

Sand the entire surface of the rail with a medium grit sandpaper, then wipe off any dust or residue with a damp rag.

Wet sand the surface with a fine grit sandpaper. To wet sand, dip the paper into water briefly before sanding, doing a small section at a time.

Wipe off the entire rail with a damp rag, rinsed and re-wetted frequently to keep the rag clean. Let the rail dry completely.

Begin painting, starting at the top and working down. Use a small brush that can easily reach into crevices and cover small areas easily.

After painting the rail and letting it dry, apply a second coat if better coverage is needed.
