How to Epoxy Your Garage Floor
A garage floor takes on a lot of wear from cars, foot traffic and storage. As time goes on, the surface of a garage becomes cracked, chipped and stained with oil. An epoxy coating seals, refinishes and protects a garage floor from further damage and gives it a shiny, showroom finish. Oil stains, gasoline spills and tires will no longer leave an impression on the garage floor when an epoxy coating is in place. Epoxy coatings can be purchased at home improvement stores, and the garage can be used again within 24 hours of application.

1
Prepare the garage floor surface by removing all items from the garage. This includes shelving, automobiles and benches.
-
2
Mix a degreasing solution, according to instructions, in a bucket; some epoxy kits already include a cleaning solution, while others do not. Scrub up heavily soiled areas using a scrub brush. Rinse the entire garage area clean with a hose and allow it to dry completely.
-
3
Mix the epoxy coating according to package directions. Every manufacturer has different methods, so read instructions carefully before mixing. Let the mixture sit for at least three minutes before use.
-
4
Apply the coating using a cut-in brush on the floor in a 10-by-10 foot space. Smooth the coating into corners using the cut-in brush. Do not heavily cake the epoxy in one area, because this will show once it dries.

5
Remove decorative paint chips from the packaging and sprinkle over the wet epoxy area. Repeat the process in 10-by-10 foot sections until the entire garage is complete. Make sure to work your way from the furthest corner toward the outside so that you do not step over wet epoxy. Allow the garage floor 24 hours to dry completely before replacing furniture or automobiles.
